Fabrics
Blended fabrics — cotton-polyester, cotton-elastane, and tri-blends — are the backbone of modern branded apparel. They deliver the natural feel of cotton alongside the durability and stretch of synthetic fibres. But that performance comes with a care requirement: blended fibres react differently to heat, detergents, and mechanical stress than pure cotton. Following the right laundering routine preserves stretch recovery, prevents pilling, and protects print integrity across hundreds of washes.
This guide covers everything your end-customers — and decoration partners — need to know about washing, drying, ironing, and storing blended-fabric garments. Whether you’re supplying private-label tees, branded hoodies, or corporate kits, sharing these care instructions adds measurable value to your brand promise.
1. Washing: Protect Stretch, Colour & Print Integrity

- Wash at 30°C or below
Higher temperatures degrade elastane and cause polyester fibres to pill. A cool machine wash with a mild, colour-safe detergent is always the safest choice. - Turn garments inside out
This single step is the most effective way to protect surface prints — DTG, screen-printed, and heat-transfer graphics all benefit from reduced abrasion during the wash cycle. - No bleach, no optical brighteners
Bleach weakens synthetic fibres and causes irreversible yellowing on cotton-poly blends. Stick to colour-safe or enzyme-based detergents. - Skip the fabric softener
Softeners coat synthetic fibres, reducing moisture-wicking performance and leaving residue that accelerates pilling over time. Omit completely for technical blends. - Gentle or delicate cycle
Reduce mechanical stress on seams and elastane threads. Use a mesh laundry bag for lightweight blended tees if available.
2. Drying: Prevent Shrinkage & Shape Distortion
- Air dry — lay flat or hang
This is the single most important rule for blended-fabric garments. Lay flat on a clean surface or hang on a broad-shoulder hanger to preserve the cut and construction. - Avoid tumble drying
Tumble driers — especially on high heat — degrade elastane rapidly, causing irreversible shrinkage and distortion. If tumble drying is unavoidable, use the lowest heat setting and remove while still slightly damp. - No direct sunlight for extended periods
UV exposure fades dyes and weakens fibre tensile strength. Dry indoors or in shade, particularly for richly pigmented or dyed garments. - Low spin speed
Limit spin cycles to 800 rpm or below. Excessive centrifugal force stresses the elastane component and can cause visible distortion along the hem, cuffs, and side seams.

3. Ironing & Storage
Ironing
- Iron inside out only on a low-heat synthetic setting (110–130°C).
- Never iron directly over a print or embroidery — always use a pressing cloth or parchment paper.
- Avoid steam on elastane-heavy blends; moisture combined with heat accelerates fibre breakdown.
- For polyester-heavy blends (65%+), ironing is generally not recommended — reshape while damp and air dry instead.
Storage
- Fold rather than hang for elastane-content garments — gravity causes gradual elongation of stretch fabrics on hangers.
- Store in a cool, dry, dark environment. Avoid plastic garment bags that trap moisture and accelerate yellowing.
- For bulk storage (e.g. branded uniform stock), keep garments in breathable cotton or polybag packaging and away from direct light.
- Allow at least 24 hours between wearings for stretch garments to fully recover their shape.
4. Decoration-Specific Care: DTG, Embroidery & Heat Transfer
Blended-fabric garments are widely used as decoration blanks. Each decoration method has its own care considerations that should be communicated to end customers:
DTG (Direct-to-Garment)
- Always wash DTG-printed garments inside out on a gentle, cold cycle.
- Avoid harsh detergents — they break down DTG ink more rapidly than standard products.
- Do not tumble dry; heat degrades the ink layer and causes cracking.
- For the first wash, add a small amount of white vinegar to the rinse — this helps lock in ink and preserve vibrancy.
Embroidery
- Turn inside out before washing to protect thread integrity.
- Use a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging during the machine cycle.
- Never iron directly over embroidery — it flattens the stitch and can damage the backing stabiliser.
- Verify the backing stabiliser is compatible with the fabric’s stretch before application.
Heat Transfer Prints
- Cold wash inside out — heat and agitation are the two main causes of delamination.
- Never iron directly over a heat-transfer graphic, even on a low setting.
Screen Printing on Blends
- Verify the ink system is compatible with the polyester content — undercured plastisol can migrate into polyester fibres and cause dye sublimation bleed.
- Cold wash inside out; avoid high-heat drying which accelerates ink cracking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use bleach on cotton-poly blended garments?
No. Bleach — even diluted — weakens polyester and elastane fibres, causes accelerated yellowing in cotton-poly blends, and strips colour rapidly. Use a colour-safe or oxygen-based stain remover for spot treatment instead.
Can blended fabric garments be machine washed?
Yes — machine washing is fine provided you use a cold or cool water setting (30°C or below), a gentle cycle, and a mild detergent. Turn the garment inside out and keep spin speed at or below 800 rpm.
Will blended fabric shrink?
DRIOV blended fabric blanks are pre-shrunk during manufacturing. However, high-heat washing or tumble drying can still cause residual shrinkage — particularly in the cotton component. Cold wash and air dry eliminates this risk entirely.
How many washes before the garment shows wear?
With correct care, DRIOV blended fabric garments are designed to maintain their structure and appearance for 50+ wash cycles. The key variables are water temperature, spin speed, and drying method — all addressed in this guide.
Can I dry-clean blended fabric garments?
Dry cleaning solvents are generally safe for polyester-cotton blends but are not recommended for elastane-content garments — the solvents can degrade the spandex component over repeated treatments. Check the care label before proceeding.
DRIOV premium blank apparel is built to last — with proper care.
Every garment we produce is manufactured to withstand real-world use across its full lifecycle. These care guidelines are part of that commitment: we equip brands and buyers with the knowledge to deliver quality that lasts long after the shipment arrives.
